About

The Hungry Snail Food Co-op aims to provide sensible food at sensible prices in convenient ways for local people.

Sensible Food
We stock all the basics. We prefer locally grown food. We like to keep things simple. We can deal in really small quantities (like 6 sprouts) or really big (25kg sack of potatoes). We can deliver boxes to a set value (e.g. £6), or pack up exactly what you want. Our produce also lasts longer than supermarket equivalents, so there's less waste.

Sensible Prices
We buy at wholesale prices and we aim to be cheaper than supermarkets while still being able to cover our costs. We are a not-for-profit workers co-operative, and we work closely with our team of volunteers who also help us to keep costs down. If we ever make a surplus we will re-invest it in the local community.

Convenience
We specialise in getting our produce home to you so you don't need a car or a taxi or to struggle on the bus. We're currently expanding our delivery services to homes, schools, children's centres and community businesses. We want to address the local 'food deserts' where fresh produce is not available in local villages.

Where are we?
The seed was sown on the Portobello Estate in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. We've now grown bigger and we deliver to most parts of Wakefield as well as quite a few local villages and towns.

Who are we?
We are Henry, Jackie and Paul, plus a team of volunteers (some of who have been with the food co-op since 2005, before us, so we respect them a lot) and a band of loyal customers who we try very hard to keep happy. Get in touch via our Contact page.

The Future
We want to encourage people to grow their own food, and eventually we'd like to sell any surpluses through the food co-op.

The Past
If you live locally you might have heard of us: we've grown out of the Rainbow Community Food Co-op that was set up in 2005 by Karen McGuire, Sarah Hannah and others working for the local NHS. We went through a process of expanding and transforming to become the Hungry Snail and working as a social enterprise between October 2008 and July 2009.

Legal
We are officially called the Hungry Snail Co-operative Ltd. We are registered as a bona fide workers co-op under the Industrial and Provident Societies Act 1965. We are registered with the Financial Services Authority (not Companies House) and our registration number is 30746R. You can find us on the FSA Mutuals Public Register: http://mutuals.fsa.gov.uk/Search.aspx

Our vat registration number is 980 1906 13.
